J.K. Rowling

"The idea that we could have a child who escapes from the confines of the adult world and goes somewhere where he has power, both literally and metaphorically, really appealed to me."

So states J. K. Rowling, author of the Harry Potter series which begins with Harry's introduction of living with the Muggles (humans like you and me) before venturing off to the school of wizardry called Hogwarts (You board the train from Platform 9 3/4 at King's Cross station, the acceptance letter says.) where he excels in the game of Quidditch. If you had to ask, it's a game resembling hockey that's played in the air, riding broomsticks no less!

From England to New York to Denmark, the world's readers are mad about Harry Potter. BBC has given Harry Potter and his magical world much coverage, as has Time Magazine, USA Today and Yahoo. There's something about a skinny little kid with a scar on his forehead shaped like a thunderbolt that strikes a chord within all of us, young or old, and it's no wonder that Harry Potter and his adventures have taken the New York Times Bestseller list by storm.

Already, all three books in a series chronicling young Harry Potter's life at Hogwarts, have occupied the New York Times bestseller list at the same time! Not bad for a first time book that appeared in Britain in June 1997 as a juvenile-fiction title.

She has planned 7 books chronicling Harry's growth as a wizard and through her eyes, we see pet owls, purple cloaked wizards, Bertie Bott's Every Flavor Beans, Fizzing Whizbees, and Toothflossing Stringmints. J. K. Rowling admits that she's always written stories since she was six years old, the first one about a rabbit called "Rabbit". "I was about six, and I haven't stopped scribbling since."

She loves collecting names, hence such words as Quidditch and Dumbledorf (an old english word for "bumblebee"), and she believes that names are really crucial for her stories.

Audio CD versionHarry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone is a children's book destined to become a classic and reading the first 100 pages (although in my case, it was listening to the unabridged audio book, totally caught up in Harry Potter's world!), I could not agree more! It's a classic that has managed to cross over to adult readers, making it top the New York Times bestseller list. I look forward to reading more of Harry's adventures which continues with Harry Potter and The Chamber of Secrets and Harry Potter and The Prisoner of Azbakan.

Divorced, living on public assistance in a tiny Edinburgh flat with her infant daughter, Rowling wrote Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone at a table in a café during her daughter's naps - and it was Harry Potter that rescued her. First, the Scottish Arts Council gave her a grant to finish the book.

After its sale to Bloomsbury (UK) and Scholastic Books, the accolades began to pile up. Harry Potter won The British Book Awards Children's Book of the Year, and the Smarties Prize, and rave reviews on both sides of the Atlantic. Book rights have been sold to England, France, Germany, Italy, Holland, Greece, Finland, Denmark, Spain and Sweden.

A graduate of Exeter University, a teacher, and then an unemployed single parent, Rowling wrote Harry Potter when "I was very low, and I had to achieve something. Without the challenge, I would have gone stark raving mad."

These days, Rowling is far from needing public assistance as she continues to write about Harry Potter's adventures at Hogwarts. The popularity of Harry Potter books continues to skyrocket all over the world as even adult readers love to read all about this skinny young kid destined to be a great wizard, although even wizards still have to go to school and put up with bullies now and then.

Kids love Harry Potter and with the Book We Love Harry Potter! We'll Tell You Why, you will discover just what it is about Rowling's books that leave children breathless after every word. Parents have even begun reading the books to their children, chapter after chapter, as they get the young ones to bed. Not to worry for those hoping to see Harry Potter in the flesh, for it has also been slated for motion picture release soon!
