Riverdance Foyle Company at the Celtic Cafe

Riverdance at the Gaiety Theatre in Dublin, June 10 through August 28, 2004.

"Riverdance is about more than dancing: it is about the life of a river, and how rain falls from the sky, seeps into streams, flows into the sea and then evaporates into the clouds only to fall as rain again.

The river ... symbolizes the life cycle, and echoes the Irish experience of emigration and renewal... it is about people who had left their homeland and traveled across the sea."

10 years ago last April, Riverdance was seen for the first time, as the interval act at the Eurovision Song Contest in 1994.

Composed by Bill Whelan, Produced by Moya Doherty and Directed by John McColgan, the full-length show opened the following February in the Point Theatre and since then has been experienced live by over 16 million people worldwide. There have been over 6,000 performances in over 220 venues in 27 countries across 4 continents. In February 1997 the album won a Grammy Award as "Best Musical Show Album". The worldwide television audience to date is in excess of 1.5 billion people.

Described by the Irish Times as:
"a remarkable and scintillating show which will linger in the memory long after the last tap has faded away. It is a celebration of Irish dance and culture, presented with sophistication and vibrancy.'

And by the Hollywood Reporter as:
"absolutely smashing, the sort of spectacle and experience that comes along once in a lifetime. Something like Haley's Comet, only rarer".

The show's producers have decided to present Riverdance in a specially devised theatrical production in Dublin's Gaiety Theatre on South King Street.

"I really wanted to bring the show back home to Dublin this year, and I'm delighted that we will be in the Gaiety Theatre. It's very fitting that Riverdance should play in the heart of Dublin where the show began, in one of Dublin's most loved theatres, which is looking simply beautiful since its recent renovation and restoration" said Producer Moya Doherty.

Director John McColgan added that he was really looking forward to presenting Riverdance in the Gaiety. "It will give the audience an opportunity to enjoy the show in a very special intimate atmosphere that will really make seeing Riverdance in the Gaiety an experience to remember."

Riverdance will open on Saturday 12th June at 8pm for a limited run, following three previews; Thursday 10th June at 8pm, Friday 11th June at 8pm and Saturday 12th June at 3pm
