Nov. 19 COWPARADE
IRELAND For Art, For Charity, For Fun -- CowParade is
the world's largest public art event, and it continues to evolve not just in size,
but in creativity and quality of art. While the cow sculptures remain the same,
each citys artists are challenged by the art from past events, inspired
by the cultural influences of their respective cities, and moved by their own
interpretation of the cow as an art object. Most important, CowParade
ultimately benefits charity. At the conclusion of each event, the cows are
herded up and many are auctioned, with a substantial portion of the proceeds benefiting
charity. CowParade has come to Ireland with fabulously fun and wonderful cows
that have "amazed and amused, dazzled and delighted the public on the capital
city's streets, in their parks and shopping centres." On Thursday, November
20th, many of these unique creations will be auctioned off at a charity event
in Dublin. One of those is a super heifer for a super hoofer: My Cow Patley
- a tribute to Michael Flatley, by Paul Rattigan. Yes, a cow with Feet of
Flames! Or should that be Hooves of Flames? In any case, check out our feature
about My Cow Patley and some of the other udderly wonderful creations by clicking

Nov. 10 BOWFIRE We
have a special fondness for fiddle music here at the Celtic Cafe, and are very
excited about Bowfire, "a total violin experience." Currently
touring in the U.S. (click
here for the tour schedule), Bowfire is wowing audiences with the virtuosity
and range of its performers, including Jon
Pilatzke, someone who first became familiar to the Celtic Cafe through
his terrific work with The Chieftains, fiddling and stepdancing. He,
Kelli Trottier and Stephanie
Cadman (accomplished stepdancers as well) provide the "Celtic focus"
of Bowfire, which consists of ten violinists, piano/keyboards, bass, drums/percussion,
guitar and cello in a fast-paced, theatrically-staged production. Lenny
Solomon, the founder and Artistic Director of Bowfire, is an
acclaimed jazz violinist who has assembled some of the best musicians to do justice
to the various genres that make up this dynamic show. They include Quebecois jazz
talent Stephane Allard; classical
virtuosos Lara St. John and Peter
De Sotto (who also sings); Bluegrass fiddler Ray
Legere; Shane Cook, a master of several styles; and virtuoso of the Chinese
erhu, George Gao. The accompanying
musicians are Bill Bridges, guitar; Lew Mele, bass; Kevan McKenzie,
drums and percussion; Bernie Senensky, piano and keyboards; and Wendy
Solomon on the cello. Soon we will have online a full
feature about this exciting show (scheduled to tour again next March), but in
the meantime, check the Bowfire site to learn more -- and don't miss them if they
come to a city near you! Official site: Bowfire.com
Nov. 6 EILEEN
MARTIN ENGAGED TO BE MARRIED Here at the Celtic Cafe we
love keeping up with the Irish dancers we have grown to admire over the years,
even after they are no longer with the shows that made them such "household
names." One of those is Eileen Martin, one of the original dancers
in the Eurovision Song Contest in 1994 that led to Riverdance
the Show. She started dancing at the age of 4 with the O'Se School
of Irish Dance in her native Dublin, and won her first World Champion title
at the age of 12, then three more over the years along with numerous other titles.
When Jean Butler left Riverdance in 1996, Eileen took over the role as
Principal Dancer, and she delighted audiences for years with her beauty and artistry. Eileen
garnered another ardent new fan at her sister's wedding last year -- Aer Lingus
pilot Shane Kearney. It was pretty much love at first sight, and a couple
of months ago Shane took Eileen for a walk up the Great Sugarloaf Mountain in
Wicklow, proposing to her with engagement ring in hand. It was a complete surprise,
but also incredibly romantic, and she said Yes! The wedding
will be in the country in December of 2004, and we couldn't be happier for this
couple. The Celtic Cafe sends its very best wishes and congratulations to Eileen
and Shane!
