ALONG THE ROAD -- THE 10TH ANNIVERSARY OF NEW YORK CITY'S GLUCKSMAN IRELAND HOUSE.
America's premier center for Irish culture features over 60 performers in
a festival of music, dance and discussion celebrating New York as the crossroads
of Ireland and America. The weeklong series of events is topped by the

at the crossroads of Irish and American culture takes center stage October 6-12
when New York University's famed Glucksman Ireland House celebrates its 10th anniversary
with an extraordinary series of concerts and events. Featuring some of the biggest
names in Irish music and dance, the week-long festival will include recitals,
workshops, a 2-day symposium of global musicologists, and a major gala event that
will also be the opening concert for NYU's new concert venue, The Skirball Performing
Arts Center. The gala concert anchoring Glucksman Ireland House 10th Anniversary
will feature the American debut of a new classical work by Irish composer and
pianist Mícheál Ó Súilleabháin, and will also
include performances by fiddle dynamo Eileen Ivers, ex-Riverdance star Colin Dunne,
banjo master and singer Mick Moloney, Cherish the Ladies leader Joanie Madden,
Irish instrumental virtuosos including Dana Lyn, Patrick Ourceau and others, as
well as the Appalachian group Up South. The evening will also include the U.S.
premiere of the 1925 silent film classic Oilean with symphonic accompaniment by
O'Suilleabhain. Other events in the remarkable week-long celebration include
recitals and concerts focusing on Irish fiddle (Brian Conway, Patrick Mangan),
piano (Felix Dolan), flute (Brian O'Halloran, Mike Rafferty, Joannie Madden, Niall
Keegan, Fintan Vallely), uillean pipes (Jerry O'Sullivan, Ivan Goff, Cillian Vallely)
and percussion; songs of Irish immigration by America's new generation of Irish
singers (Susan McKeown, Dan Milner); New York's modern pub music (Black 47); and
an afternoon theatrical production of 18th century material from Harrigan and
Hart performed by Chris Simmons and ensemble. In addition to its celebration
of Irish arts, the Glucksman Ireland House 10th Anniversary Festival will also
feature a global perspective on ethnicity and culture, with a 2-day symposium
titled Music and Identity. The symposium will feature some of the world's
foremost musicologists, including Martin Stokes (UCLA), Helen Phelan (University
of Limerick), NYU's Michael Beckerman, former president's of the American Folklore
Society Roger Abrahams (University of Pennsylvania) and John Szwed (Yale University),
Gage Averill and Mick Moloney, Visiting Fellow Lincoln Center's Lenny Sloan and
Fintan Vallely (University of Ulster).

understanding of Irish and Irish American culture and scholarship since its inauguration
