Flatley participates in a Pitney Bowes charity auction in aid of the National
Literacy Trust of the UK Michael Flatley contributed his artistic
talents to a unique fundraising auction in support of yet another good cause,
the National Literacy Trust of the UK. The Pitney Bowes 'Pushing
The Envelope' initiative was designed to raise awareness of and funding for select
literacy charities in the U.S. and Europe through the auction of one-of-a-kind
celebrity-designed envelopes. Celebrities were invited to create their art
on a regular white envelope, and the auctions were held on eBay in September,
2004. This was the description of the envelope created by Michael: Michael Flatley - Lord of the Dance Hand-designed
envelope and autograph 100% of proceeds go to The National Literacy Trust Michael
Flatley provides an inspired self portrait. A must for all Lord of the Dance fans! Envelope
measures approx 11cm x 22cm. Envelope will be mounted and framed prior to despatch
(at no extra cost). All proceeds raised will go to the National Literacy
Trust (NLT). The National Literacy Trust's purpose is to make an independent,
strategic and practical contribution to the creation of a society in which all
can enjoy the skills, confidence and pleasures of literacy to support their educational,
economic, social and cultural goals. www.literacytrust.org.uk Click

The
final eBay bid came to GBP 431.00 (Approximately US $773.62) -- quite a nice sum
for a most worthy cause. Kudos to both the fan, Carine of Belgium, and to Michael
for participating on behalf of an organization devoted to literacy! From the National Literacy
Trust website: The National Literacy Trust, founded in 1993,
is an independent charity dedicated to building a literate nation. The importance
of literacy has long been recognised: it underpins all educational achievement
and is central to economic advance; it helps develop human potential and raises
self-esteem. We are the only organisation concerned with raising literacy standards
for all age groups throughout the UK.
Mission: The National Literacy
Trust's purpose is to make an independent, strategic and practical contribution
to the creation of a society in which all can enjoy the skills, confidence and
pleasures of literacy to support their educational, economic, social and cultural
goals.
What we are doing: Building a literate nation will take
much more than just focusing on improving the education system. Everyone concerned
needs to consider the broad picture and see how the home and social circumstances
help lay the foundations for successful learning. We all need to work together
to create the national culture in which education can thrive. Therefore the Trust
focuses on: providing a support network: our web-based literacy
support network, now strengthened by the Literacy and Social Inclusion project,
pulls together the best ideas and information to help everyone share good practice
putting ideas into practice: our practical initiatives
- Reading Is Fundamental, UK, the National Reading Campaign, Talk To Your Baby,
Reading The Game, Reading Connects, and the Vital Link - develop ways of working
in partnership to turn promising ideas into effective action
promoting a systems approach: our emphasis on
all the factors that affect literacy achievement encourages those interventions
that will be most effective in the long term:
We are confident
that in our first 10 years the Trust has made a significant contribution to the
development of improved national policies and a higher profile for literacy. Learn
